A modern tea house near Brown University specializing in directly sourced premium teas from small farms in China, Taiwan, and Japan. Beyond the tea bar, Ceremony offers brew guides, workshops, and tea ceremony programming, with private tastings by appointment. A second cafe operates at 121 South Main Street in Providence.

East Village · New York

Second-floor Japanese teahouse in the East Village, established in 2004 around the concept of omotenashi (whole-hearted hospitality). Cha-An serves Japanese desserts and teas, and hosts a weekend Japanese afternoon tea ($68 per adult) with three tiers of sweets such as yuzu cream puffs and warabi mochi plus savories like egg sandwiches and inari. Seats are limited to 20 guests per session, and the teahouse also offers traditional tea ceremonies and mochi and flower-arrangement classes.

Downtown Asheville · Asheville

Bohemian-style teahouse on North Lexington Avenue in downtown Asheville, serving responsibly sourced and authentically prepared teas from around the world. The menu pairs globally curated teas with savory vegetarian and vegan fare and sweet treats. Two sister locations operate in West Asheville (707 Haywood Rd) and East Asheville (1011 Tunnel Rd).

Burlington

Bohemian tea room and loose-leaf shop serving Burlington for 19 years, recently relocated from Church Street to South Winooski Avenue. Pours more than 100 direct-sourced teas — from Yin Zhen white and Feng Huang Dan Cong oolong to matcha and pu-erh — with gluten-free and vegan sweets and light fare, plus handcrafted teaware; the owners visit tea fields annually to source.

Golden Gate Park · San Francisco

The Tea House and gift shop inside Golden Gate Park's Japanese Tea Garden, run by an independent concessionaire, serving tea within the garden grounds. The garden is open daily, with admissions and visitor information managed by the Gardens of Golden Gate Park.

Greenpoint · Brooklyn

Flagship Brooklyn tea shop and tasting bar from Kettl, a company that imports exceptionally fresh Japanese teas direct from producers. Staff guide visitors through matcha, sencha, gyokuro, and hojicha selections at the Greenpoint shop. A dedicated matcha-focused sister location, Kettl Matcha Sen Mon Ten, operates nearby at 38 Norman Avenue.

Northeast · Minneapolis

Opened in 2020 as 'an oasis of calm in the middle of Minneapolis,' Northeast Tea House specializes in gongfu-style tea service and house-milled matcha — one of only two matcha mills in the US at its opening. The tea house pours informal tea ceremonies, sells teaware and loose leaf, hosts classes, and keeps a limited-screen policy so guests can unplug over tea.

Chinatown-International District · Seattle

Tea house on the street level of the Panama Hotel, a National Historic Landmark in Seattle's former Japantown, serving patrons since 2001. Offers a selection of about 40 teas including sencha, hojicha, lavender earl grey, and ruby oolong. The room displays historical artifacts including suitcases left by Japanese American families sent to incarceration camps during WWII.

La Jolla · San Diego

A San Diego specialty tea company established in 2017 that sources teas directly from farmers and creates original blends. The La Jolla shop focuses on quality loose-leaf teas, teaware, and educational tea experiences including Japanese tea ceremonies.

East Village · New York

East Village matcha teahouse opened in 2017 by tea master Souheki Mori, a practitioner of the Japanese tea ceremony for over 30 years. Setsugekka serves hand-picked matcha from different regions of Japan, ground fresh on a traditional heavy stone grinder, and offers formal and open tea ceremonies and tea lessons. Seating is walk-in only, and the shop hosts workshops in calligraphy, ceramics, and other Japanese arts.

Marble Works District · Middlebury

Teahouse and importer in Middlebury's historic Marble Works District, sourcing over 100 fresh loose-leaf teas from China, Japan, Taiwan, India, and Nepal. Serves tea in house and to-go with house specialties, small snack plates, and daily chocolates, and also operates as a tea and teaware wholesaler.
