Lovejoy's Tea Room in Noe Valley is the city's afternoon tea — cozy and quirky, filled with mismatched china and furniture, handmade tea cozies, and collectibles. Every service comes with a bottomless pot: the Cream Tea is $26.95, the High Tea $31.95, and the Queen's Tea $40.95, with a Wee Tea for children under ten. It runs Thursday through Sunday with last seating at 3:00 PM. An hour north in Sebastopol, Muir's Tea Room & Cafe occupies a lavishly restored Queen Anne Victorian inspired by John Muir, with a cottage garden and a menu that is entirely plant-based — Muir's Afternoon Tea at $38, a Cream Tea at $30, and a monthly themed high tea. It is the wine-country stop.

Grant Avenue and the Serious Leaf

Red Blossom Tea Company has worked directly with farmers and craftspeople in China and Taiwan since 1985, and the shop on Grant Avenue is organized around provenance, season, and craft — premium oolongs, pu-erh and aged teas, jasmine and blossoming teas, Yixing teapots and gaiwans. A few doors up, Vital Tea Leaf runs multiple storefronts along the same street and teaches tea by tasting: Iron Goddess oolong, Blue People ginseng oolong, Jasmine Pearl, brewing technique included. Song Tea & Ceramics on Sutter Street is the quiet specialist, centered on high-elevation oolongs, spring-crop green teas, and handmade ceramic vessels, open Wednesday through Sunday.

Golden Gate Park and the East Bay

The Tea House inside Golden Gate Park's Japanese Tea Garden is run by an independent concessionaire and serves within the garden grounds — sencha at $5.75 for a small pot, matcha at $10.50, with udon, dango, and mochi ice cream alongside. Across the bay, Asha Tea House in downtown Berkeley is a modern craft tea house pouring artisan whole-leaf teas and premium stone-milled matcha sourced from small family farms, open daily, with a second location on Kearny Street in the city. Teance Fine Teas on Grayson Street is Berkeley's fine-tea retailer and tasting room: white and green teas, oolong and pu-erh, matcha, and traditional teaware, with tastings offered anytime during open hours, Wednesday through Sunday.
