The Full Service

Afternoon tea at The Westgate Hotel is the formal tier: the Versailles-inspired Grand Lobby downtown, live harp music, three courses of tea sandwiches, handmade savories, pastries, and French macarons. Service runs Wednesday through Sunday from noon to 3:00 PM at $55 for adults and $35 for children, plus tax and an automatic 20% gratuity. The Britannia Tearooms in the Midway District is the British institution — family-owned since 2001 by the owners of Shakespeare's Corner Shoppe, with themed rooms including a Sherlock Holmes Sitting Room and a Mad Hatters Tearoom. The Queen's Afternoon Tea is $54.95 with a pot from more than 70 teas; the Duchess runs Tuesdays at $39.95; gluten-free, vegan, and dairy-free versions add $5. North in Escondido, The Grand Tea Room has served historic Grand Avenue since 2011 — the Grand Tea at $50, the Garden Tea at $46, a Cream Tea at $19.25 — with a gift shop and a last full seating at 2:00 PM Tuesday through Thursday.

The Leaf in La Jolla

Paru Tea Bar on Girard Avenue is a different discipline. Established in 2017, the company sources directly from farmers in China, Japan, Thailand, and Vietnam and builds its own blends; the shop carries ceremonial-grade matcha and teaware and runs educational experiences, including Japanese tea ceremonies. Note that drink service ended in August 2024 — Paru now operates as retail plus priced experiences: a traditional hand-whisked bowl of matcha at $10, first come, first served, and a private tea tasting at Bow Hall at $260 per reservation. Worth the Drive North

The Tea House on Los Rios in San Juan Capistrano is the region's cottage service — a historic house in the Los Rios district with porch seating, open daily, pouring loose-leaf black, green, white, rooibos, and herbal teas. The published experiences run from the Garden Tea at $46 to the Royal Tea at $84 with a glass of Veuve Clicquot, and weekend brunch fills the mornings. From downtown San Diego it is roughly an hour up I-5; book the porch and make an afternoon of it.
