Philadelphia takes its tea the way it takes most things — with a landmark at the center and a lot of character in the neighborhoods around it. Downtown, the Rittenhouse Hotel's Mary Cassatt Tea Room is the formal address. Down I-95 in Wilmington, Hotel du Pont adds a French accent. The Main Line and the Brandywine keep British tea rooms; South Jersey keeps Victorian ones. And at the bottom of the Garden State, Cape May does something almost no American town does anymore: a daily afternoon tea, served on a porch.

The Main Line, the Brandywine, and South Jersey
A Taste of Britain in Wayne is the Main Line's standard — open daily with more than 50 teas, a $40 Full Afternoon Tea, and a proper savory list of Cornish pasties and sausage rolls. Down in Kennett Square, Mrs. Robinson's is retail only, a self-described 'Mad Little Tea Shop' known for its functional mushroom blends. Just over the Delaware line, Wee Fancy Tea is a mother-and-daughter room with Yorkshire roots, running from the $32 Queens Tea to the $85 Alexander Tea with gold-leaf scones. Across the river in New Jersey, The New Leaf in Riverton has served afternoon tea in a restored 1910 storefront for more than 30 years — the Riverton Royal Tea at $32.95, the Queen's Tea at $38.95, Thursday to Saturday by reservation. Jane's Tea House in Haddon Heights pairs a walk-in tea bar with reserved BYOB seatings and $5 scones. And in Chinatown, Prince Tea House serves French-imported teas in decorative sets until late.

Self-described "Mad Little Tea Shop" on State Street in downtown Kennett Square, open seven days a week. The shop retails loose-leaf teas including featured seasonal blends, best sellers and functional mushroom teas.
Wee Fancy Tea

Mother-and-daughter British tea room whose founders trace their scone-and-tea tradition to grandparents from Yorkshire, England. Every loose-leaf tea is hand-selected and every bake made fresh in-house, from the $32 Queens Tea of sandwiches, desserts and scones with unlimited tea to the $85 Alexander Tea with soup, salad and gold-leaf scones. A $17 Princess Tea serves children 12 and under.
The New Leaf Tea Room & Gift Shop
Riverton
Tea room in a restored 1910 Victorian storefront and adjacent 1898 house in the Victorian village of Riverton, operating for over 30 years. Afternoon tea is served Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays by reservation only, with a freshly baked scone, seasonal fruit, assorted tea sandwiches, desserts and a pot of tea. Themed teas add musical, historical and theatrical presentations.
Jane's Tea House
Haddon Heights
South Jersey tea house "reinventing tea time" since March 2020, with a walk-in tea bar Wednesday through Friday from 10 am to 3 pm and reserved afternoon tea seatings Wednesday through Sunday. The tea service brings delicate finger sandwiches, quiches and handmade scones, and the BYOB room includes a selfie station with props and hats. Themed events, hands-on workshops and catering round out the calendar.

Cape May
The Harrison, an 1867 Victorian built as the summer residence of Philadelphian Samuel Harrison, prepares afternoon tea in house every day and serves it in the Grand Dining Room between 4 and 5 p.m. — imported teas and tisanes, blueberry scones, finger sandwiches — or on the porches overlooking Columbia Avenue's horse-drawn carriages. Nearby in West Cape May, Tea By The Sea has sold loose leaf since 2002, from Scottish Breakfast to Baroness Grey, in 2-ounce bags at $19.95; take one home for the drive back up the Parkway.
